Landscape Stories

Call for artists/arts organisations or collaborations

The Forest of Bowland is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty covering 300 square miles of rural Lancashire and North Yorkshire. Designated in 1964, it is an area of unspoiled and richly diverse landscapes, wildlife and heritage with a distinctive character which sets it apart from the surrounding countryside.

Managed by the AONB, Landscape Stories is a community-led heritage project which aims to understand and celebrate the Bowland landscape we see today through discovering more about the people and activities that have helped to shaped it. Thanks to almost £50,000 funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund; additional funding from Lancashire County Council, Grassroots, the Duchy of Lancaster Benevolent Fund and the AONB itself, the project is working with local people and visitors to discover, record, interpret and share information about heritage features and traditional rural

industries within this special area.

Landscape Stories has teamed up with Spot On, Lancashire’s Rural Touring Network to celebrate the work in a creative, high quality public event in those communities in February 2011.

There are three distinct projects which need a team of artists or one company to bring the creative elements together in one artistically cohesive celebration.

Scale: These are small projects, with around £2000 earmarked for each one with a tight deadline. Your imagination may go wild, but the reality is that there may be only a few days work for each one. This will evolve through discussion with the chosen team.

Artforms: we have some thoughts on what may work with each project, but are open to

suggestions.

The communities are in the Ribble Valley and Pendle area of Lancashire:

Chipping: Ideally we seek a community musician and/or storyteller to bring the heritage and social history of cheesemaking in Chipping to life, by working with community groups and primary schools in the village. This project may combine with an exploration of the local chair manufacturing. However, due the fact that many people in the local community were made redundant this year by the chair factory this may change due to community sensitivity.

Barley: To work with schools and an active local archaeology group to bring the archaeology, social history and landscape of the community to life. Project could be drama/storytelling or music based. We currently imagine a small piece of community theatre but we are open to ideas.

Slaidburn: An exploration of lime (cement) and its impact on the landscape and communities. Could involve mixed age groups, but mainly school children. This could link the geology of lime, with traditional and modern industrial practices, We image a visual story exploring the story of lime from being under the seas, to cement in your houses.

Timescale:

  • Deadline for submissions: Monday 13th September 10am
  • Project outline: confirmed early autumn to tie in with school programmes
  • Final events: February 2011.

What we need from you:

Essential:

  • One side A4 statement on why you are interested in this project and what you can bring to the process
  • Evidence of having worked in a collaborative, creative, participatory process with rural communities
  • A CV or statement of your experience and practice
  • The ability to get to remote communities under your own steam
  • CRB clearance
  • Public Liability Insurance of £5 million

Desirable:

If you are able to help with additional fund raising, or can bring cash or income in kind to the table, this will help the process and build the project, but it will not exclude you.

Fee:

A fee of £500 will be paid to the chosen group for preliminary consultation and planning meetings.

Final budget costs to be confirmed by the Landscapes Stories Project Officer but the scope of the whole project is aiming to be £6000. However, we seek assistance in some areas of fund raising, or partnership income in kind.

Please tell us if you are VAT registered.

Deadline for expressions of interest:

Monday 13th September 10am. Please send/email to Sandra Silk
